Yahoo Messenger - IM's Disappear In Chat Windows

If you are having issues where your IM's, either sent or received are not showing up in your chat windows, you probably changed your javascripting settings in IE so try this fix...

When you send/receive an instant message and no message appears, you most likely have Scripting disabled in your Internet Explorer.


To enable Scripting:
Click the Tools menu on your Internet Explorer toolbar and select Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Internet (globe) icon and click the Custom Level button.
Scroll down to Scripting. Enable the following:
Active scripting
Allow paste operations via script
Scripting of Java applets are all enabled.
Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

Please Note: Restart Messenger and you should start seeing text in your IM windows once again.

If the above doesn't work for you, there are some other fixes mentioned in these forum threads.

Yahoo Messenger 11 Out Of Beta BUT Now Has A Weird New Extra Process With Command Line "CookieProxy"

Updated - 7/6/2011 - Two more posts from the CHAD Yahoo Group added below the screen shots.

I'm just going to copy-paste several posts that I recently made in the Yahoo_Messenger Yahoo Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/yahoo_messenger showing how the latest version of Yahoo Messenger 11.0.0.2009 has an extra instance of the process yahoomessenger.exe that shows up from time to time.  This new, extra instance of yahoomessenger.exe, after digging into it, with Process Explorer version 14, shows a command line ending with "CookieProxy" so I'm not sure if this is some new tracking thing that Yahoo is doing or what it is but when I Googled for more info on this, I found NOTHING else about "CookieProxy" or any mention of this related to Yahoo Messenger so I'm posting on my blog to get it out there while I continue to dig into this new version of YM.  Please comment with any information you readers may find about this issue.  See the screenshots below.

Has anyone else installed the latest release of YM 11?  I installed it (full and clean install) on my XP computer and now when I start up YM, two instances of yahoomessenger.exe show as running in Task Manager, Processes Tab.

Does anyone else see this?  ALL previous (recent) versions of YM only ran one instance of this process so I'm not sure if it's the new version or if possibly is related to the registry hack I did a couple weeks ago that allow me to run more than one instance of YM on my computers (see previous post to the group about this).  I'm still able to open multiple instances of YM on my computer and each new instance starts and even after signing into one of the other YM, only one more instance of the yahoomessenger.exe process starts so it seems that the extra process only starts with the first YM sign-in.

This type of double instances of a programs main process is not uncommon as Internet Explorer 7/8/9 all start two instances of iexplorer.exe when the first window is open with only one tab and then as additional tabs are added, another iexplorer.exe shows up.

Let me know if any of you are seeing this double instance of yahoomessenger.exe with the new YM 11 version.  I've Googled this but since YM 11 latest version is so new, I don't know if anyone else has seen or worried enough about this to post about it.

I think it might have been due to the recent registry hack that I did to enable me to have multiple instances of YM running with different Yahoo ID's, all at the same time on the same computer.  After closing down the other instances of YM and then shutting down the first one, that originally was showing two processes, now after restarting YM, only one process is showing.

I'll have to keep an eye on this for the next few days and after reboots to see if it occurs again.

Thanks for replying though.  At least I know it should only have one instance of the process running now.

Amending my previous reply (below), Jim, please keep checking Task Manager's Processes Tab, sorted alphabetically to see if a 2nd yahoomessenger.exe shows up from time to time.  I've been watching mine and on occasion, there will be two instances of the process and without any action from me, the 2nd instance will disappear.  I'm wondering if it's YM 11 doing something different now... maybe with the archiving of chats (do you have archiving turn on?), or maybe with updating the little flash ads that show up at the bottom of the main YM friends list window.  I'm trying to find a pattern but haven't put the pieces together yet... and nothing showed up on Google search about this issue yet either.  I guess I could pose the question to Yahoo's tech support if I don't find an answer myself soon.

yahoomessenger.exe process that is running as part of the new YM 11.x.2009 version and the Command Line for the second process reads - Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe" /CookieProxy - so it's some kind of cookie, which as most know can be innocuous items that are downloaded with every website but can also be used at tracking cookies.  I'm not sure what this CookieProxy does yet but will do more digging.

I have found that I can end this extra process and it does not adversely affect the main YM program but then it comes back randomly.  I kind of had a feeling that this extra process was related to the ad's that show up in the various YM related windows and this CookieProxy seems to confirm this since Cookies are really used by advertisers and many websites to see what the customers are doing when on a website or which ads they click on, etc.  They use this raw data in their sales presentations to advertisers... if they can show that their site visitors (customers) stay on their site a long time so advertisers will be more inclined to buy ad space on the website.

As I become more assured that this is related to advertising stuff in YM, I may contact Yahoo to find out their response and whether this is a tracking cookie or the more common and innocuous cookie that doesn't give the website or in this case, program, very much info.

Depending on which way this goes, I may also be creating a new blog post with screen shots of this *new* CookieProxy that seems to be part of the new YM 11 version.

In my YM 11 version, I run the program and open Task Manager and also see 2 YM listings. Unfortunately my listings are not alphabetical. However, the first YM states Mem. Usage at 616 and right under it is YM Mem. Usage of 1428. Don't know what that means. Also, scrolling way down is a listing of:
YahooAUService and it is always listed as such with a small number of bytes.
Whatever all this means does not seem to affect the running of the program.

The YahooAUService (AU=AutoUpdate) is probably related to something else Yahoo that you use... or POSSIBLY, if you did not check the box in YM, it may be constantly running the AutoUpdater.  If you go into YM's Preferences, on the Alerts & Sounds section, at the bottom is the box to check for "Alert me before downloading a YM update".  Check that and see if that gets rid of the AU service.  If it doesn't then you have to look at what yahoo services you use that might need that running.  I have never seen that running on my computers but then I always check the box on YM to NOT do auto updates.

I'm still digging on this new instance of yahoomessenger.exe with the CookieProxy command line, but it seems it's running on everyone that has the latest version.  At first, I thought it might only be me since I did a registry hack so that I could open more than one instance of Yahoo Messenger at a time but I guess I'm glad to see it's running on other people who do not have this registry hack.

Yahoo Messenger Webcam Sharing, Video Calling And Audio Calling Issues

Because this issue has come up a couple of times this month in the Yahoo_Messenger Yahoo Group, I thought I would compile the questions and answers here for future ready reference.

OK... clicking the Camera Icon on an open IM window did NOT work and acted as you indicated but this is not how I usually use Video and Voice. I activate them separately in most cases.

Hmmmmm... I just tried just a Voice Call to my other ID on another computer and that didn't work either.

Next, I turned on my Camera manually by going to the main Messenger Menu, then clicked "My Webcam" which did activate my cam. I then sent a Cam Invite to my other ID by clicking the Actions>More Actions menu on the separate IM window and that did send an invite and I was able to accept the invite on the other computer. But trying to initiate a Voice call, computer to computer, from either computer to the other FAILED.

Note that I have 10.x.1270 on one computer and 10.x.1267 on the other computer so it's not just limited to .1270... or possibly it is.

I'm going to fire up YM 9.x on my third computer and check it with the other two.

Yep... it seems Yahoo is having major problems with Voice mainly as I was able to initiate Cam invites with each computer but couldn't get Voice to work at all.

If you look on your Help Menu, click Report A Problem To Yahoo and fill out the report. I am also going to on all three of my computers with different ID's.

More than likely, it's just Yahoo being Yahoo with their constant need to improve their servers... and yet never doing it as well as they should.
They have been reporting that they are improving their servers for as long as I can remember and any time there is a problem, they say they are improving their servers.

I'm SOOOOOOOO glad that I could not go through with buying a Yahoo Phone In/Out phone number last year when I tried. I had gone through the process, picked a number, went all the way to the check-out process, entered my credit card info and tried to process the order but that wouldn't go through. After trying to get someone from the Phone In/Out service to contact me for a few days to get my order processed and it didn't work, I gave up and got a Skype phone number... which works fine.

I also use MagicJack on my desktop computer... which works fine... but better yet, Google's Gmail accounts now include a Google Voice option so you can make unlimited incoming and outgoing phone calls in the USA and Canada and video/voice calls to other computers anywhere. They had a few glitches the first day that the unlimited FREE calls went online but every time I've tested it since, it has worked fine.

I wish Yahoo Messenger's other features worked fine all the time as I would like to be able to rely on YM but over the past 10 years, I've just seen too many times that it's not working properly often enough to rely on it alone. I guess the old saying, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" holds true for YM.

Now, for basic IM'ing, YM still is the most popular IM program for me.  While Skype works great for phone calls, voice and video calls... IM'ing someone on Skype is not an easy process. There's no way to just type in someone's Skype ID and initiate an IM session with them without adding them.. or trying to add them and then they can initiate an IM session with you without them actually adding you. Yes, I've notified Skype of this flaw... or lack of feature.

If you NEED to use these features, you could try doing a clean installation of YM according to my blog article (see sig) and see if that works but I suspect this is just a Yahoo server issue since it's not working on any of my computer with three different versions. Because of YM's inherent bugs, I ALWAYS do a full and clean uninstall before doing a full and clean install... just to make sure that any left over remnants of the older or uninstalled version aren't left behind to muck things up for the new install.

So I decided to do another install again after I had made the post. After it finished I launced it. Tryied doing a Voice call first and it started to ring. So I canceled the call and initiated a Video Call and it too started ringing. I was able to video chat for about 5 hours afterwards with no issues.

Sidenote: I reported my problem to Yahoo after every attempt to make a video and voice call so hopefully whatever bug appear everytime I reported it in.

It just worked for me also... without doing any uninstalling... which leads me to believe it was just another of the hundreds or thousands of issues that Yahoo have had with their servers over the years.

Eight out of 10 times, when YM is acting up, it's due to Yahoo Server issues. Signing out and signing back in will often fix things as you will likely get a different server but if you've tried that and are still having problems, then it's likely a dirty installation.

Glad yours is working again... and if you did a clean and full install, instead of the way Yahoo recommends, then you have an even better chance of things working well. Make sure you put a check mark in the box so you get an alert before Yahoo makes updates to your YM. That box is on the Messenger Menu>Preferences>Alerts & Sounds section.

Hello can somebody help me, I have problems with chatting and using the webcam. On Yahoo!Mail I was online chatting with my friend, he asked me to send him an invitation to view my webcam. I tried to find the icon, but couldn't find it.

I did send a chat message to the Customer Care and they said : Regarding your concern, please be informed that viewing webcam using the Chat feature in Yahoo! Mail is currently not possible.

So what I did I installed the Version 10 of Yahoo! Messenger and thought everything will be fine and I can see my friend. I did read that Version 10 is compatible with the other Versions of Yahoo! But it seems not be the truth. I've got now 10 and he has 8. I did send him the invitation to view my webcam many times he accepts but it does not work at all.

He says the problem is with me I should fix it.

Can somebody help me to use this webcam? I tried to make Video and Voice Calls but its not working. I need to say that he is the only one I tried, because his the only contact I have, so I cannot try it with somebody else's.

I did read was Lenny The Computer Guy wrote on Tue Sep 7, 2010 11:40 am, on the Message #7412 Video and Voice Call issues and it was really interesting what he wrote down. I thought maybe he can help me or somebody else's.

I'm guessing you have tried several times on several different occasions? Sometimes, Yahoo's servers will just be acting up and signing out and signing right back in will get you on a better server and things will work fine.

Have you run the Audio & Video Help Wizard on YM yet?

On the Help Menu>Set Up Video And Voice.. then go through the steps. Let us know what it says so take notes of what each step says and does.

Also, check to see which version you have of YM 10. On the same Help Menu, click About Yahoo Messenger and let us know the actual version, including the numbers behind the decimal points (or does everyone call them dots now? lol) I want to make sure he has the latest version of 8.1x and not 8.0x.

Tell him to also do the above and let us know his version and that his audio/video is working... does he also have a cam and can he send you an invite that connects?

I don't have 8.1x running on any of my computer any longer so I can't test them but as far as I know, 8.1x, 9.0x and 10.x are all supposed to be fully supported and compatible.

I had to peek at the group message 7412 to see what I had said... I'm guessing you've tried things that way also.. instead of just a all-in-one video/voice connection?

Your other option, as you saw in that message, if both of you have reasonably new/fast computers, is to use Skype but Skype does use a lot more system resources than YM.

Yahoo Mail contacts are not the same as Yahoo Messenger contacts. Yahoo Mail contacts are people that you email and have added to your Yahoo Mail contact list.

Yahoo Mail contacts can have an email address from any of countless email service providers or ISP's whereas Yahoo Messenger contacts have to have a Yahoo ID (which can be the same as a Yahoo email address, but not necessarily) or a compatible user ID like a Windows Live ID.

The thing you are referring to as "webmessenger of Yahoo Mail" is probably not the correct term. Yahoo's Web Messenger is a browser based version of Yahoo Messenger that has limited functionality. Yahoo Mail Chat is the Yahoo Messenger version that works right off of your Yahoo Mail page when you have it turned on. I leave it off since, if you are on YM and then sign into Yahoo Mail and the Yahoo Mail Chat is turned on, it will boot you off of YM.

Your "friends" list from Yahoo Messenger should be the same when on Yahoo's Web Messenger or Yahoo Mail Chat but your YM "friends" may not be the same as your Yahoo Mail "contacts".

The webmessenger is well... a web version of the messenger. In this sense it is the same thing as what you call Yahoo! Chat

I'm not at all talking about the address book contacts but about the messenger contacts. In my case those are not the same.

In your terms my Yahoo mail chat contacts are not the same as my Yahoo messenger client contacts.

OK. Just to be sure we're on the same page, here is Yahoo's Web Messenger. You do need Java and Adobe Flash working in your browser to use this. http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/  Remember that signing into WebMessenger (or Yahoo Mail Chat) will sign you out of YM. When you sign in (for me, the sign-in window opened as a new tab on IE8 and then when I signed in, that tab closed and the WebMessenger tab became the active version of Yahoo WebMessenger. You will see an active image of your YM program with the same friends listed. You can IM your friends from there but with limited function compared to the regular YM program.

If you go to http://mail.yahoo.com/ and sign in, that will be your Yahoo Mail account and on the new version of Yahoo Mail, up at the top you will see Yahoo! Mail | Hi, (your name) | Available (or whatever your YM status is set to) | Sign Out. If you click on the Available or other status, you will get a drop down menu to change your status. On the left panel, under your Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Spam, etc. folders, you'll see a dotted line, then Contacts and your Yahoo Messenger friends will be listed there. If you click (or double click) on a name, it will open a new tab inside that Yahoo Mail frame and you can start IM'ing someone from there and it will work just like Yahoo Messenger but with limited functions (i.e. - no Webcam or many other features that are on YM). Yahoo calls (or called) this Yahoo Mail Chat when it first came out... although I don't see that name listed on the Yahoo Mail page.

Yahoo Chat is the Yahoo Chat Rooms which you can access from your main version of YM.

On all of the above, your Yahoo Messenger *friends* or *contacts* should be the same since Yahoo stores the database of our friends on their own servers so we can see our friends no matter which computer or YM version we sign in on.

Your Yahoo Mail contacts will be different and probably will include all of your YM *friends* but also any email contacts that you have. I just clicked on the Add link next to Contacts in the Yahoo Mail left panel and that opens a new Contacts Tab in the Yahoo Mail window frame and if you click on View All Contacts, you will see options. You will also see a BIG contact form that can be filled in with all the same kind of Contact Details that can be filled in for anyone on your *friends* list on the main YM program. I haven't checked to see if this info is kept on Yahoo Servers or our own computers. I did a test on one of my own other Yahoo ID's and then signed back into the main YM program which then "Disconnected" me from the Yahoo Mail Chat version of YM. I then viewed the Contact Details for my other Yahoo ID and sure enough, the change I had made was there so that kind of proves that the "Contacts" listed under Yahoo Mail Chat is synced with the main Yahoo Messenger program, at least as far as contacts/friends are concerned and any edits made to their contact information.

I hope that explains things better from my end.. and answers your questions but let me know if you still have any other questions.

Thanks for this long comprehensive reply. In fact after emailing a Yahoo! employee I got an answer to my problem. This explain the core of my problem being that messenger contacts lists are not the same, should I use the client of the web version in mail.

Here is what I was told:

- Almost all Messenger clients get your Buddy List first, then fills it in with Address Book data. Mail, in contrast, gets your Address Book data first and fills it in with Messenger data (online status).

IMHO Mail should act the same as other Messenger clients and get your buddy list first. This is being reviewed but not do not expect a change in the near future.

Do you mind if I share your email with the Product Managers who are currently reviewing this behavior?"

That's what I said in my first reply! ;-)

As far as which version of YM you use, the main YM program has the most options but if all you want to do is be able to send IM's back and forth, then any version will work.

HOWEVER (I guess I could have said BUT, since there's always a BUT... lol)... when using the Yahoo WebMessenger or Yahoo Mail Chat version's IF you save your archives of chat sessions, they will NOT be saved in your archives (although I do recall that Yahoo was going to give people the option of saving their archives on Yahoo's servers). ONLY your chats done on the main YM program will save into your archives on your computer.

I'm still not sure what you mean by "a way to replicate my contacts". As Yahoo also said in their reply, your YM contacts/friends are the same no matter which version of YM you are using. AND... on the main YM program, your Yahoo Mail contacts also get added to your friends list at the bottom under the folder, Address Book. You may have to click the arrow to expand that list if you want to see them all.

If you want:

people that show up online in Yahoo! are different than people who show up online in the messenger client. Or for exemple, if I want to chat with someone in Y!Mail, I'm asked to first add this person as a contact, but then when I login later in the Yahoo messenger desktop client it does not show up in my contact list.

That's why there is no synchronization between the two messenger contact lists. And obviously there are several databases.

That's why I want to be able to replicate my contacts which ever messenger I am using

When you added them in Yahoo Mail Chat, did they add you back and allow you to see them? If they didn't, then that may be why they're not showing up. When adding people on YM, if they don't add back, it shows up as Pending but I'm not sure if the Pending thing transfers over to the other YM versions on the web.

OK. I just signed into Yahoo Mail under one Yahoo ID, call it 1st ID, and then opened Yahoo Mail Chat or YM in Yahoo Mail, which caused that ID to get signed out of YM. Then I manually added another Yahoo ID, called 2nd ID, that I have. Of course, it showed that 2nd ID as offline, since it was. I then sent a test message to that 2nd ID also.

I then signed into YM under that 2nd ID and I got the offline message from the 1st ID BUT I did not get an add-request to the 2nd ID that I had added from the 1st ID... so it seems the "adding" of a contact on Yahoo Mail Chat (or YM in Yahoo Mail) doesn't send the same kind of add-request as happens when you add someone from the regular YM program.

Next, I signed out of the 2nd ID on the main YM program and signed back into the 1st ID. That 2nd ID that I had added as a contact in the Yahoo Mail Chat (or YM in Yahoo Mail) DID NOT show up as a friend/contact in the main YM BUT did show up as a new "contact" in the Address Book group of "friends" on the main YM program

So.. it seems that when adding a contact from either WebMessenger or Yahoo Mail Chat (aka YM in Yahoo Mail), it will add them as an address book contact for Yahoo Mail, which will show up on your friends list under the Address Book group but it doesn't add them as a normal "friend" in one of your other groups.

I had a feeling this would happen since, when adding a friend from Yahoo Mail Chat, it did not offer me an option as to which group I would like to add the new contact. I have groups for "Business & Customers", Family & Close Friends" and then all other "Friends". On my older Yahoo ID's, I also have groups for people I have not chatted with in over two years as those will be deleted from the main list of friends (but kept in my address book group) since Yahoo only allows 500 friends... at least that's the last count I remember them allowing. I know that if I don't delete people once in a while, my friends list fills up and YM prompts me that I have to delete someone before adding someone new. Since figuring that out a long time ago, at the beginning of each new year, I start a new group of "Friends" with the year in front of it, like 2008-Friends, 2009-Friends, 2010-Friends and next year, 2011-Friends and for my non-business and non-family/close friends, as I chat with these *other* "Friends", I move them into the new year's group and this also lets me know that the people in the 2008 group have not replied or been online in over two years and it's probably OK to delete them from my friends list (but I still leave them in my address book... just in case they pop up again). I keep my YM set to ONLY show Online Contacts so I can quickly see if someone from an old group signs in... then I look at the archived chats for that person and decide if I should send them a "Long time no see" type IM or just delete them.

I hope that clarifies things... or at least leaves you in such a state of confusion where only overly medicating (or drinking a bunch of adult beverages) will fix things. It is still the weekend... at least here in the USA. LOL

First, lets make sure we have terminology correct and uses. Display Names are usually what I would reference with Yahoo Profiles (now called Yahoo Pulse) and how that name will show up in Chat Rooms.

I think.. what you are talking about right now, is how your name appears to the other users on your friends list and that is partly in your control and partly in the other users control... for folks that have already added you... but you can fix it for all of your *new* friends. You can't fix it for old friends and new friends can even change how you appear on their list by right clicking on your name and choosing Contact Details, which opens a window for them to edit what they want to show up for you.... but that's a separate issue than what you are asking about.

Here's why...

Click on the main Messenger Menu on your friends list window. Choose My Contact Details. In the Name area, you may have filled in your first and last name or some other info and your friends can choose to show either the Yahoo ID or the Contact Name in their own Preferences so if you have your Name as Bob Cal... or Rocking Bob or whatever, then that is what will show up on their end when they added you if they had their settings to show your Name instead of your Yahoo ID. They can edit the info you initially provided. On the main Messenger Menu, then Preferences, Appearance section, there is a setting for each user to show for each contact, if they want to show "Nickname or First and Last Name" OR "Yahoo ID". If you have nothing filled out for your First and Last Name or Nickname, then they will only get your Yahoo ID.

What I do is go into the My Contact Details, which will open up a window called "Add A Contact" (don't ask me why???) but you will see near the bottom that it has your Messenger ID. Leave that field with your Messenger ID... but on the top fields under Name, change your Name to whatever you may want to appear to some of your *new* friends... but this will not change how your *old* friends still see you... since they could have changed it however they wanted anyhow. Sometimes, a friend may request your contact details and if you allow this, they will get ALL info that you have in your contact details so use discretion since that file can contain all sorts of personal information (see all the tabs and fields that are available).

Now... if you are talking about a Display Name that might show up in a chat room, that would come down to editing your profile. To do this, click on the main Messenger Menu, then My Account Info, which will open a browser window where you will have to sign into your Yahoo account. Once in, you can edit your profile to however you like.

Yahoo Messenger Virus Becoming More Of A Problem For Unsecured Computers

In my last blog, I listed some of the FREE computer security programs that I use and recommend. What I didn't post in that blog was the question that prompted my answer. Also, see that blog for any updates I have done and may do about "Some Computer Security Programs That I Use And Recommend".

Since then, more and more of my Yahoo Messenger (YM) friends have become infected and then their YM program starts sending out IM's with a malicious link and if any of their friends click on the link, they can then become infected if their computers are not properly secured.

DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK.

Whoever is sending you those IM's is infected by having clicked on the link and now their YM is sending out malicious IM's to everyone on their friends list... and probably every other person out there as well.

If you've already clicked on the link, you are likely infected as well, unless you are absolutely, positively sure that your computer is super secure.

Since I do keep my computers super secure, I did test the link when I got one of those IM's from someone on my friends list and it immediately tried to start downloading a file which my security software promptly stopped and alerted me to the malicious attempted download.

If your computer security programs did not alert on the file and allowed the file to download, then you are infected.

You should update all of your computer security programs (antivirus, antispyware, antimalware, etc.), disconnect from the internet, re-boot your computer into safe mode and run scans until you have removed or quarantined all traces of the infection.

With Yahoo Messenger and EVERY other IM program that I've ever used, you will get a certain number of malicious IM's, mostly from strangers but occasionally from infected friends. If you get an IM with a link, DO NOT CLICK THE LINK without first asking your friend if they sent the link and ask them what the link is to (usually they have no clue they are infected and their YM is sending out these malicious IM's). When they say "Huh???", you know they are infected and you can forward these same instructions to them.

The prevalent use of URL shortening services is making this even more of a problem as hackers who start these virus campaigns can use a URL shortener so folks don't even know the real URL that they will be sent to. I ONLY use http://TinyURL.com and use the PREVIEW mode so when I click on a TinyURL link, it will open to a TinyURL page that shows the full sized link and then I can choose to go to that link once I know where it will be sending me.

BTW, there is no need to spend a single penny on security programs. ALL of the *good* companies make their programs available to home users at no charge, either by a fully or mostly functioning download or as an online scan.

I use and recommend:

Comodo Internet Security http://www.comodo.com/ as a FREE and fully functioning security suite that has a professional featured, award winning firewall, good antivirus with real-time and scheduled scanner and good real-time antimalware protection.

MalwareBytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ as a backup scanner for when needed or folks that surf the net wildly, they can do weekly scans just to make sure that their main security didn't miss anything. NO SINGLE PROGRAM IS 100% EFFECTIVE.

SuperAntiSpyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ as another backup scanner for when needed as above.

a-Squared FREE http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/ as another backup scanner for when needed as above.

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html - This doesn't do any scanning or use any system resources. You simply download the updated definitions on a weekly basis and enable them to protect your computer from LOTS of malicious websites, adding them to your Hosts file, and also block LOTS of malicious drive-by software.

Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/ - I really only use the Immunization feature on this program although it does have a scanner as well. The Immunization feature will build a nice Hosts file to supplement the one with SpywareBlaster and also further protect your Registry. I do use the scanner from time to time to look for Flash Cookies that CCleaner might miss.

I haven't used this next program but I have read lots of good reviews about Microsoft Security Essentials. I think Comodo is TEN TIMES better especially as far as the firewall since MSE only uses the standard Windows Firewall which I find to be NOT very good. You can get MSE for FREE and also use the FREE online scan from Microsoft, called Windows Live OneCare. http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm - RUN the FULL SCAN once a month and it will check your system online for virus/malware and also do a cleanup and tune-up of your computer, repair your registry and also defrag your hard drive.

hello,

i am new in this group, and i am looking for help with my YIM

during 2 years i have a permanent problem : nobody from my contacts can see my photos from my display image, and instead they see a black box, but all yahoo pictures and avatars from my display image can be seen by all of them

i did everything i could, i downloaded an optimized IE8, FireFox, and updated to the last adobe, i tried to uninstall and install different YIMs, to delete the icons caches, to delete the icons folder, the profiles folder, etc. i followed all reasonable instructions, but nothing worked...

i suspect that something happened to my files responsible for showing my photos, they could be corrupted, changed, deleted, or misplaced because i noticed that my YIM is often hacked

What do you mean "my YIM is often hacked" ?

If you go into chat rooms, you will inevitably be blasted by numerous 'bots' .. electronic messages not from real people .... these will continue even after you sign out. This is hardly 'hacked'.

I have been using Yahoo IM for many years .. and only one problem ... I clicked a link sent to me in an IM chat message - and unfortunately I had disabled my virus protection. NEVER click a link in chat IM ... NEVER !

Well, I don't know about "NEVER" but one should definitely proceed with caution with links in any IM program or emails also... especially if their computers aren't very secure.

When I get an IM with a link from someone and were weren't chatting already, I don't click on the link until I start chatting with the person first and ask them if they sent the link... unless it's a link to a benign site like a YouTube link or their blog or something like that. If it's a link to a shortened-url type website those are very suspicious since you can't see where you're going first.

Now that said, if I'm chatting with someone and we're showing each other articles or websites for information, then if they send me a link, unless the link is a shortened-url type link, I'll click on it without worry, especially if it's a full URL where I can see where it's going to bring me.

Of course, I keep my computers pretty secure... probably in the upper 95% of computers on the net, IMO... so I'll even click on suspicious links sometimes just to see what they try to do and to make sure my computer's security is working like it is supposed to work. I do daily backups of my important files and weekly to monthly cloning/imaging of my hard drives so if I should ever muck things up by clicking something I shouldn't have, it won't be a disaster for me.

I do agree with you about "being hacked" though. ;-)

Well, the subject says it all.

On one of my older computers, I'll still have YM 8.1x, my Vista laptop will have 9.0x and my main XP computer will have 10.0x BETA, just to try it out and be able to help more folks who might be having problems with it.

In preparing my main computer, I will be uninstalling YM 8.1x, then rebooting, then I'll run CCleaner Registry Cleaner and WinASO Registry Optimizer to clean out remnants of 8.1x. Then I'll look at the Yahoo Messenger Program file to see what is left and possibly delete some things manually and I'll move a copy of my Archived Chats out of there to my desktop in case something goes wrong with the 10.0 upgrade.

Then I'll install the FULL version of YM 10.0.0.542 BETA that I downloaded from FileHippo.com, http://www.filehippo.com/download_yahoo_messenger/. I'm still not brave enough to use the installer version from Yahoo.com. LOL

I'll post later to let you all know how everything goes.

Well... things aren't going so smoothly so far. NOT with YM 10.0 BETA but rather with trying to uninstall YM 8.1x. The uninstaller has been running for about 15 minutes and seems to be stuck or at least bogged down heavily at around the 90% uninstalled point. Task Manager is showing the UNWISE.exe process (I'm not sure that's a "wise" choice of a name for the uninstaller process...lol), is using up 70% to 95% of my CPU processing ability.

Well... I take things back... partially.

While I was typing this message, whatever was bogging down the uninstaller seems to have been fixed/uninstalled and the uninstaller finished the job although now, GLB1A2B.EXE process is using a large percentage of the CPU processing ability. This type of file name is usually a Temporary file name created when installing certain programs so I'll see how long this process is going to continue to run. It's 9:55AM CDT as I type this. I'll finish and send this email when this TEMP file stops running.

OK. It's 10:00AM CDT and the TEMP file quit running. Time for a reboot and then running the registry cleaners. I'll send another update as events occur.

OK. The registry clean up and install went OK. I didn't see any bundled software like toolbars, etc., attempting to be added with the full version download from FileHippo. I'm not sure if Yahoo gave up on trying to push all that crap on people or what but I was glad to see I didn't have to make sure I unchecked all the junk.

I did have to go through all of my Preferences and fix many of them as the new version DID NOT remember all of my previous settings. This could be due to my cleaning out all the junk from the old version but I did leave the various .ini files and a few .dll files that I thought would save my settings. Maybe I saved the wrong ones. Another thing the new download had as default settings was adding YM to the startup processes of my computer so every time the computer starts up, YM would start up. I HATE programs that try this. I changed that setting in my Preferences and also went into MSCONFIG and made sure YM was unchecked in there also. It was no longer checked once I changed my Preferences and restarted YM.

I'm typing this now as YM 10.0 BETA just froze up on me and I had to close it using Task Manager. It was showing as (not responding) in Task Manager. It froze after I turned on my cam using the main Messenger Menu> My Webcam link... and then when I went to tweak some of the camera settings, as soon as I clicked the Settings button on the Camera window menu, it froze up. It could have been a quirk. I'll know after I try it again.

One MAJOR thing I noticed with YM 10.0 BETA is there is NOT a way to send JUST a cam invite to someone on your friends list who is not using YM 10.0 also. The previous versions had buttons for sending a cam invite or starting a voice call but this new version only has the voice call OR Video Chat which is their new supposedly SUPER video chat mode but only works when both folks have YM 10.0. However, when I signed in on one of my other computers, under a different Yahoo ID and I had my cam turned on in YM 10.0, I could request a cam view from the other computer... but I could NOT send that other ID a cam invite without requesting it from the other computer. A minor annoyance but I guess it's not a major problem. I usually am chatting with someone and mutually agree to turn on video chatting anyhow... they'll just have to ask to view my cam instead of me being able to send them an invite on my own. Although, sometimes when I'm in a chat room, I'll use a cam invite as a way of weeding out a potential bot. LOL Bots can't accept or decline a cam invite so it lets me know if the person is real without them getting my Yahoo ID for future spamming, which is what happens if you send a bot an IM.

OK. I just re-started YM and turned on my cam again.

Then I went to the Preferences for my webcam again and clicked the Camera Settings button again. This time it did NOT freeze up so the last time could have just been a quirk.

Well.. I'm not so sure "It is the best". I've been finding some really good things BUT also some really bad things with it. Hopefully, the really bad things will be corrected as Yahoo continues to fix this BETA version.

Since playing with YM 10.0x BETA for the past 24 hours, here's some pros and cons...

CONS -

I am not able to send a cam invite to people as easily as I could with previous versions. There is NO regular Cam Invite button or even a menu option under Actions Menu to "View My Webcam". There is the new Video Chat button but that is grayed out for most people who are still using older versions. After a lot of experimenting, if I have my cam on, the other person can request my cam but I can't just send them an invite. That's a flaw that needs to be fixed. Further, in chat rooms, when right-clicking on a name in the list, there is an option to Invite to View Cam but in the private IM windows, that option does not exist. Obviously, it works since the other person can request a cam invite and I can even send one by right clicking on their name in a room but I can't send a cam invite by right clicking on their name in my friends list or any other way.

YM 10.0x BETA uses a LOT more system resources even when just sitting there signed in and idle. YM 8.1x used around 40,000K of Memory when it was just sitting there whereas YM 10.0x BETA uses over twice that amount... around 88,000K of Memory. This can be seen in Task Manager>Processes Tab>Mem Usage column (click on it to sort highest to lowest). So, folks with older or less powerful computers should be careful about upgrading to this version. When I first opened YM 10.0xBETA, before signing in, it was using only 30,000K, then when I signed in, it jumped up to 65,000K and even without doing anything, that number kept climbing just now and it's up to 94,000K now... even higher than when I shut it down a little while ago when it was showing 88,000K. Well, while typing this, it dropped back down to 89,000K. When I minimized the Friends List window, it did drop down to only 7,000K so that's a good thing if folks need to run other programs and need some system resources freed up... same with IE, if you minimize it, it quits using as many system resources in one of the IE processes.

PROS -

When going to a Chat Room, the CAPTCHA process DOES NOT have to open in a browser window any longer. The CAPTCHA process opens right in the Chat Room window which is a much quicker and easier way to do things and saves some system resources since it doesn't have to open a browser window each time you change rooms. It also makes changing rooms quicker and easier.

NOT SURE ABOUTS -

When I first did the Invite To My Cam to someone in a chat room (by right clicking on their name), a pop up window came up with the option to do the Video Chat, Webcam or Cancel. Stupidly, I put a check mark in the "Do Not Show This Message Again" and chose Webcam and now that message does not show up any longer. I'm not sure if this is going to affect anything or not. I guess, once IM'ing with someone else with YM 10.0x BETA, I can still do the Video Chat thing from the IM window so this shouldn't be a problem but others should be warned to NOT put that check mark in that box. Someone with a MAC and the YM for Mac version could not view my cam no matter what but I'm not sure if that was a one time issue or something that will affect how YM 10.0x BETA and YM for Mac's work for everyone. I do not know a lot of Mac users to check this out. The one person I did try with, we had to go to a Chat Room so I could Invite To View Cam from the Chat Room list since they did not have a menu option to view my cam and I couldn't send them a cam invite as previously described above. Even when I did Invite them to view my cam and they accepted, it would only open the Cam window in a grayed out screen and they could never see me. I'll have to wait to test this with other Mac users to know if this is something permanent or not.

That's it for now... I'll report back later with more info as new things become known to me.

See my previous reply in answer to an earlier reply by another member. You might also have too much junk running on your computer which slows it down. Post your System Resources and look at your Task Manager to see how many processes you have running. I'm sure you could speed things up quite a bit... almost any computer can be speeded up rather easily if folks would get rid of some of the junk running on their puters.

Yes, 10.0x BETA uses a LOT more resources than YM 8.1x but in the interim since that last reply, I opened up 9.0x on my Vista laptop and it's using up 120,000K while just sitting there open and even when I minimized it, it was still using the same 120,000K. This could be as a result of the Vista OS instead of YM. (see below.. it was just a quirk that it was using that much.. maybe because I had a cam invite going on that computer yesterday and it might have never released the memory usage even after the cam was turned off). I'll have to check that again another time.

I'm also looking at my oldest computer.. about 10 years old with only 384MB of RAM and only a 16Gig Hard drive... to give you an idea about how old it is. LOL I have YM 8.1x running on that one and when just sitting there open, it was using around 60,000K and then when I minimized it, it dropped down to only 4,000K.

I'm restarting YM 9.0x on my Vista computer to see if the 120,000K was a quirk or not. When I first started YM on the Vista, before actually signing in, it was using 31,000K. After signing in, it started climbing to 65,000K and then settled back down at 62,000K. When I minimized it, it DID NOT use less resources and stayed at the 62,000K level. Once again, I'm not sure if this is a Vista issue or a YM 9.0x issue but at least with 10.0x BETA, it does use much less resources when minimized, just like 8.1x does. I'm not sure how 10.0x BETA will react on a Vista computer.

There's not that much of a difference between 40,000K (around 40MB of available RAM), 60,000K or 90,000K (around 90MB of available RAM) unless a machine is already running a lot of processes or has very limited system resources like on my old computer with only 384MB of RAM. I run MS-Office Outlook and have at least one IE window open at all times on that old computer and also run other programs from time to time. The only time that old computer really slows down is when one of my security programs is running a scan or when MozyHome is doing it's daily backup. I try to shut down everything else when they are running just so they'll run faster. I do have most of the other non-essential services and JUNK turned off so when I first turn that computer on, it only has 29 processes running, which includes Comodo Internet Security (3 processes), MozyHome backup (2 processes) and LogMeIn (2 processes). When I boot that computer into Safe Mode, there was only 14 processes running. To give you an idea about how my Vista computer works, it starts up with about 70 processes running.. many of them, various HP processes but since it's still under warranty, I don't want to take off all the HP junk that came installed on that computer. As soon as the warranty expires, all that HP crap is coming off. LOL

Update on the below...

One of the CONS that I listed below was premature. There is a way to send a cam invite to friends or others that one might be chatting with. It's just that the menu option was moved. On previous versions of YM, the "Invite To View My Webcam" was listed under the main Actions Menu or you could right click on someone's name on your friends list and the option would be listed there. NOW... you have to go to the Actions Menu on an individual IM window and then under More Actions, the "Invite To View My Webcam" option is listed. When right-clicking on a friends name, then choosing "More Actions", this option to send a cam invite does not exist.

Further testing of cam invites with other versions are meeting with mixed success but this would also happen with previous versions of YM so I'm not sure that this is a result of incompatibility or just YM server issues. I haven't had any noticeable problems with PhotoShare although occasionally photos will bog down and not come through all the way (staying pixelated on the recipients end) but this also happened with previous versions of YM.

I still haven't tried the Video Chat feature (which is supposed to be like a Super-Duper Hi-Def Webcam and Audio chat session) with someone else that has YM 10.0 BETA so I'm still not sure how that is going to work out yet.

I still haven't found anyone with YM for Mac that I've been able to invite to view cam either so I'm not sure if that was only with that one friend or if it's a conflict with all YM for Mac users.

I think this will help you.

Go into your Preferences (from the main Messenger menu) and then click on the Appearance section. Then put a bullet in "For each contact, show: Nickname or First and Last name"... if you have the bullet in "Yahoo! ID", I think this affects things.

I remember when I upgraded from YM 9.1x to YM 10.0x, I had the same problem and thought I lost everything as well but when I changed my Preferences, it all came back.

I hope that fixes things for you as well.

All of that Contact Info is saved on Yahoo Servers so you will see it whenever you sign into YM, no matter which computer you're on so there's always a chance that Yahoo Servers are acting up but hopefully the above will fix things.

Let us know if that did the trick.

Quick-Steps To Summarize The Below Information:
(NOTE: Create A Restore Point before each step if you are unsure of your computer tech abilities)
1. Uninstall Yahoo Messenger (YM) using the Revo Uninstaller. Save a copy of your Archives folder if you keep archives of your chat sessions. Turn off and re-start computer.
2. Run CCleaner Registry Cleaner (or WinASO or other legitimate registry cleaner)
3. Run Secunia Online Scanner to see if it finds any OLD remnants of YM.
4. Make sure you have updated versions of Adobe Flash Player and Sun's Java browser plugins for Internet Explorer, preferably version 8 (mainly for use in the Chat Rooms, not as much for YM)
5. Download a FULL sized version of YM from FileHippo.com or your preferred download site, to your desktop or preferred download folder.
6. Turn off and re-start your computer and make sure IE is working properly, including the Java and Flash sites.
7. Go to your downloaded FULL sized version of YM and run the .EXE file to start the installation. You may not want to install any toolbars or other add-ons that Yahoo may have included in the download. DO NOT RUN YM YET.
8. Move your copy of your archive folder back to where it should be.
9. Start up YM and go through all of the Preferences Menu setting things up how you like them since the above steps would have removed all of your previous settings.
10. Start IM'ing your friends, testing all of the features and go to Chat Rooms to make sure things are working well. If they aren't, leave me a comment below or go to the Yahoo Messenger Yahoo Group (link in next paragraph), join the group and post your questions there.

Here's something that should fix the invisible IM's issue that many are seeing.

You probably changed your javascripting settings in IE so try this fix...
When you send/receive an instant message and no message appears, you most likely have Scripting disabled in your Internet Explorer.

To enable Scripting:
Click the Tools menu on your Internet Explorer toolbar and select Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Internet (globe) icon and click the Custom Level button.
Scroll down to Scripting. Enable the following:
Active scripting
Allow paste operations via script
Scripting of Java applets are all enabled.
Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
Please Note: Restart Messenger and you should start seeing text in your IM windows once again.

I thought I had done this before but after someone contacted me off list, I searched through the archives and couldn't find my post so I guess I've just added bits and pieces of this information in various replies over the years but here is how I prepare my computer before downloading a new version of Yahoo Messenger (YM).

Uninstall old version of YM using Add/Remove programs for the YM uninstaller. Reboot computer. OR BETTER YET, use the Revo Uninstaller and use it's default settings to find and remove a lot of the junk that the normal YM uninstaller leaves behind. http://www.revouninstaller.com/ Go through each step and delete the files and registry keys that it highlights and recommends except you might want to save a copy of your archived chats and other archived info as mentioned later in this article.

Reboot your computer after each step in this article.

Run a GOOD registry cleaner. I use and recommend WinASO Registry Optimizer http://www.winaso.com/download.htm which is FREE to download and use as long as you like, but the trial version has a limitation that is more of an annoyance than anything else, in that it tries to get you to pay for the unlimited version but if you don't mind dealing with the annoyance, it works as good as the paid version. I've been using the FREE trial version for several years since version 1.0. I've never had a single problem using it to clean and optimize my registry. The downside/annoyance of the free trial version is that it will only clean 10 items each time it is run. The first time you run it, you may find several hundred items that need to be fixed so you will have to run it dozens of times.  OR BETTER YET, you can run CCleaner's Registry Cleaner option, http://www.ccleaner.com/, to get rid of most of the junk and then follow it up with WinASO (FREE version) to do a full cleaning since it does a better job than CCleaner. After that, if you run WinASO 1-2 times a week, it will be much quicker, easier and keep your computer from being bogged up as much with junk. After cleaning/fixing your registry, reboot your computer.

Another FREE registry cleaner is offered as an online scan from Microsoft by going to the Windows Live OneCare Safety Center http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm and run the Clean Up scan.  You will have to allow a small download for the scan to run and you may also see the new Microsoft Security Essentials advertised on that page.  For an MS product, it's getting rave reviews from many in the computer tech and security industry. It's not needed to use the free scans and it's not as extensive as other FREE security software that is out there but it is an easy to use security program for folks that do not want to learn the more sophisticated security programs.

Now download and SAVE (to "desktop" or your favorite file folder for saving things where you can find the download after you reboot) the full version of Yahoo Messenger from http://www.filehippo.com/download_yahoo_messenger/ or your favorite safe program download site. DO NOT chose "RUN" during the download and DO NOT RUN or execute the full version after it is downloaded. The full version of YM is around 10-15MB (depending on which version) in comparison to the Yahoo Messenger "official" installer that is only around 484kb when downloaded from http://messenger.yahoo.com/ I find that the Yahoo installer will have more problems especially if someone has a strong firewall or slow internet connection.

It's this "installer" version that causes so many problems, IMO. Because when you run it, it then starts downloading other bits and pieces of the program and if there are any glitches in your internet service or with Yahoo servers (and we all know there are those! ;-\), you can end up with a bad download with various bugs. When you download the full version from FileHippo or another download site, after you download it and get ready to run it, there should be Publisher listed, which should be Yahoo! Inc in a blue link which is to a digital verification site to verify that you have a legitimate version of the program. This works for most programs you may download although there are many that will not have this digital verification capability and when you go to execute one of these "unsigned" programs, you will get a little warning message on the box. If I know I downloaded the program from a reliable site, I don't worry about this but if you are not sure, you should never run a program without a digital signature attached. Many other programs have a way to run a check-sum on the download to make sure you got the download in full without errors but I've never seen this available with YM. Usually, if you have the digital signature, it means things went smoothly and you have a full version without errors.

If you use CCleaner, you should run it now to clean out your temporary files and TIF files. I am not going into all the aspects of CCleaner in this post but for most folks, it can be a problem to remove things they did not want cleaned if they do not go through and become very familiar with the program. It will clean auto-complete info, search history, cookies, etc., when used in the default mode. The CCleaner Registry Cleaner is OK to use in default mode but the rest of CCleaner should be understood before running or the user could lose information that they actually wanted to keep. This is why I like WinASO as a registry cleaner. Even a rookie can run the registry optimizer without causing problems to their computer... at least it's never caused me problems in hundreds of times of running it.

If you don't use CCleaner and did not use the Windows Live OneCare Safety Center Cleanup Scan, you should use your web-browser Tools to empty the TIF files. Then run a Search on your computer for all temporary files and remove them manually. If you don't know how to do this, then you should download CCleaner and become familiar with CCleaner and use it for this purpose or use the Windows Cleanup online scan. Feel free to ask me here and I'll tell you how I have my CCleaner set up to run it daily to keep the junk files off my computer.

Reboot the computer and leave all other programs turned off except for anti-virus and firewall.
Then, if you downloaded YM full version to your desktop, simply click on it to execute the program. If you have a firewall, you should get a pop-up asking for access, from the YM program installer, to the internet and other areas of your computer. Permit this and if you use an advanced firewall (which you should be using over the Windows Firewall which isn't very good), put a check mark in the box to allow it on a permanent basis. You can always go back to the firewall user interface and delete this permission later if you want to.
Choose the "CUSTOM" install instead of Yahoo's recommended install. This makes sure that all you install is YM and not all the other junk they try to get you to install like tool bars, etc. I choose CUSTOM install on ALL programs that I install on my computer to make sure I don't install junk I didn't want. The CUSTOM install still gives you the option to install other things but it doesn't force them on you without your knowledge. This is common practice on all FREE programs as a way to help them pay for their free program. Google, MSN, Yahoo and other companies pay to have their toolbars and desktop search programs included in the downloads. Reputable download sites and programs give you the option of opting out of these add-ons.
Now, once the YM program is installed on your computer. Reboot again.

Rebooting is important to computers as it's a way of letting the computer put everything back into place. If you are in the habit of leaving your computer on for days at a time, if you find it getting sluggish, a reboot will normally speed it back up again.

Now start up YM and go through your preferences, setting things to work how you like them. Become familiar with the Messenger Menus and the Preferences Menus and ask questions here about anything you may not understand.

The last thing that I do with any new install of YM is go into the C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger folder (or for version 10.x, the Yupdater.exe is now located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Yahoo!\YUpdater and find the file Yupdater.exe and change the name to Yupdater-NOT USED.exe. You can also use your firewall to simply block Yupdater.exe from connecting to the internet but many folks do not utilize their firewalls in an advanced mode so Yupdater.exe would have access unless you went into your firewall and blocked it. This way with changing the file name, your installed version of YM will not automatically update to any newer release of YM without your express consent as YM will not find the Yupdater.exe file when it tries to contact Yahoo like it will do on a regular basis if you don't block it or change the file name. YM 10.0x does have a section in the preferences that allows you to check off saying that you do not want YM to update automatically and I have that checked off but I still change the Yupdater.exe file as well.

If you decide you are not happy with your current version, you can then repeat the steps above and download a more recent version and install that version. I've found that allowing Yupdater.exe to connect to Yahoo, it constantly stays in contact with Yahoo whenever YM is in use. I've verified this with my firewall. I'm not sure why an updater process would need to stay in constant contact with the manufacturer. Even my Antivirus, Antispyware, etc., only contacts their updates once a day for new malware definitions. None of my other programs on my computer stays in constant contact for updates. They either run on a monthly basis or some other time interval. Certainly, Yahoo isn't releasing daily updates so YM should not need 100% access to Yahoo servers, IMO.

Hopefully, if all went well, your newly installed or reinstalled version of YM will be much more stable and cause less problems for you and you will not need to update to new versions as often.
I still run YM versions 8.1x, 9.1x and 10.0x and they are very stable on my computers compared to some of the stories I read about daily and with the people I help on a daily basis here and on other forums and my friends and neighbors that used the Yahoo Installer.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions you may have. I'll probably put this on my blog with some screen shots of WinASO and CCleaner and how I have my CCleaner set up so it does not clean things some people actually want to keep and I'll post a link when I do.

Ooops. I almost forgot one step. It may not be critical but it could cause you to lose your archived chats if you have YM set to save them.  Before uninstalling and cleaning up your computer with Revo Uninstaller, WinASO, CCleaner and Windows OneCare Cleanup utility, for XP, go to C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\(your yahoo name)\Archive and copy both of the folders in the Archive folder.  For Windows Vista and Windows 7, the file path is C:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\.  There should be a Conferences and a Messages folder.  Just copy and save them to your desktop or your other favorite place to save things.

Usually, during an uninstall and reinstall of YM, using the standard uninstaller, these folders are left in place but in the past, if I had a buggy YM install, I would sometimes go and delete the entire Messenger folder (C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger) (and the AppData folder for Yahoo!\Messenger in Vista/W7) to make sure I get rid of all traces of the buggy version. By saving copies of the Archive folders, I can move them back into their proper place after a new clean install. If you go to this extreme of removing everything associated with YM, make sure you run WinASO, CCleaner and Windows OneCare Cleanup utility before doing the clean install of the new full version download.

I did the complete uninstall and downloaded the latest IM 10.x and the scan said it was perfect, it also picked up 3 earlier versions of yahoo that are lying in my registry that uninstall has not removed. How do I identify that and erase it?

I have copied the new IM 10.x to a flash drive and am going to uninstall the sytem again and reinstall after I have erased the old Im's, as I still have the same display problem at 480 x 800 ech time I log on. Added to that, my cam works on IM, but when I choose a room it won't connect, just says getting room list and stays dead, so it's got worse damnit.

Thats why I want to start fresh again, also I now get a add on notification on any site saying website wants Adobe flash player wants to be added on. I have okayed it and run it but nothing changes the system and it keeps on appearing.

I have also checked my add ons in tools and they are all enabled.

So once again, would you kindly give me your thoughts?

See one of my previous replies. After you did the FULL install of YM, did you check the YahooMessenger.exe file Properties>Compatibility Tab, to make sure that you don't have a check mark in the display settings box? It shouldn't be but possibly one of your old versions has a registry key that is affecting the settings of your new download.

If that isn't the problem, I'm wondering if one of the old version or some registry remnant from one of the old version is messing things up in other ways.

Did you save the FULL download from http://www.filehippo.com/ (or your preferred download site)? If you saved it on your desktop or in a folder in your My Documents folder or however you have your computer organized, then there is no need to copy that to a flash drive. When you uninstall YM, it will not delete the file that you downloaded so after you clean things up, you can just click on that .exe file again and start the install process all over again.

When you uninstall YM 10.x, I would use the Revo Uninstaller and then follow the instructions with Revo to delete all of the leftover registry keys and program remnants. See my blog article for more details.

Then run the Secunia Online Scanner again and see if it finds any remnants of the old versions of YM. If it does, it will actually list the file path to where that remnant was found and you can just follow that file path and just highlight and delete the files. OR... after running Revo, you can just go to your C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger and delete the entire Messenger folder but you may want to go through that folder and only delete the things you do not want to keep. For example, I save my archived chats so I move those Archive folders to My Documents folder and then move them back to their proper place after I install a new version. For Windows XP, the Archive folder is in the above file path.

For Windows Vista and Windows 7, the file path is:
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\

If you feel comfortable fooling with your Registry, you could also search for Yahoo Messenger entries in your registry and clean them out manually, although I would use CCleaner's Registry Cleaner and then WinASO Registry Optimizer to look for and clean up any errant registry entries... and if you used Revo Uninstaller, it probably already got them all!

After things are all cleaned up, then do the installation again, check the Properties>Compatibility Tab to make sure nothing is checked there and if you are still having monitor issues, I would have to think it's one of the other problems with a driver that needs to be updated or rolled back. See my earlier reply for some of the other issues that caused monitor issues related to YM.

As far as Adobe Flash, once you've uninstalled it and removed the old remnants, using the same methods above, go to http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html and it will check your version and http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ will show an animated flash video that says "Adobe Flash Player Successfully Installed" and then change to another Adobe related Ad. If you aren't updated or installed properly, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (you may want to uncheck the Google Toolbar thing... I NEVER install all of the add-on software that is often pushed from many free programs) Click on Agree And Install and follow the prompts to install Adobe. Prior to doing this, Secunia's Online scanner should have told you about out-dated Flash remnants and you can follow the file paths to delete the outdated flash files that were left over from previous installations.

As far as going to the rooms, I think you have to have Java installed. Did Secunia identify if you had Java installed and updated? If you didn't, get it here. http://www.java.com/getjava/ On that page, right below the Free Java Download button, there's a link to "Do I Have Java?" so you can check it first and that will also tell you if you have the latest version.

I probably need to add some of this info to my article on doing a FULL and CLEAN install of YM since Flash and Java are often needed with YM.

Run Check Disk (ChkDsk) On Your Computer On A Regular Basis







Quick Steps (for XP and Vista and probably for W7)
Open My Computer
R-Click on Local Disk C (or your primary hard drive) and choose Properties
Click on the Tools Tab and then the Check Now Button which opens a new window
Check the boxes for "Automatically fix..." and "Scan for and attempt recovery..."
Click Start which will open a new window that says "The disk check could not be performed... Do you want to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?"
Click YES, then OK out of the Local Disk Properties window and close the My Computer window. 

Then the next time you will not be needing your computer for an hour or two or more, after closing all your running programs, turn off the computer.  Then restart it and follow the instrutions, then go do something else while Check Disk (or Disk Check) does it's thing... or you can watch the first time to see it go through the five steps.
